hey what is the best electric guitar for
under a thousand quid if you live in the
u.s. it’s u.s. dollars here it’s
something else
I Denmark but um what’s the best hotel
how do you find it and I was totally
misguided as with so many other things
on this instrument when I tried to pick
out the best instrument because I was
all about well what are the best brands
of guitars fender better than Gibson
should you have a squire or is that
complete trash compared to the original
fender or is it you know there’s so many
questions so many brands and it’s really
a jungle of illusion it is it’s like the
emperor’s new clothes every single time
right you could say in different lines
of products you know quality really
means something right but in clothing
for instance right you could buy a pair
of pants I did that a couple of years
ago you know many years ago if you
bought a pair of jeans that were
expensive it was because the fabric they
were made up of was really quality right
so they would last for like thirty years
you know hard work doing concrete stuff
and then would still be hanging together
and then you know a couple years after
quality was design and feel so you could
buy a couple of very expensive jeans and
they would you know break after a very
short period of time because the the the
clothing was all or the fabric was worn
out already when you bought them right
so so what is quality and when it comes
to guitars I have one measure and one
measure only and that measure is you
what you know you should try a thousand
guitars and then tell me what guitar did
you love the most to play there is no
other measure that’s worth listening to
right and when you pick out that guitar
and it’s all it’s certainly equally much
about how is it adjust do you like the
you know thin strings softer strings do
you like them to be close to the fret
well I you know for one like that I like
to be up it to be a pleasurable
experience to play my guitars and I like
them to be easy to play of course why
would I make it harm because of tone
clothes if that’s okay if you want to
place zero twelve
my really hard hi strong really hard to
play and you love the sound of them more
than you hate the feeling in your
fingers when you can’t bend then you
have to use enormous force to make it
happen then by all means go for the
heaviest strings but you need to figure
that out you really do and I used to
spend you know I had a Mesa Boogie was
heavy as you know combo I was used to
drag it around and I really yearned for
the jist a Marshall stack right I was
just oh and you can’t carry it anyway so
you have to you have to stay you have to
remain there is that are you dragging it
around and I was playing a strat type of
instrument blade back then really
high-quality instrument but whenever I
was playing cheaper copy guitars that
somebody really set up right it didn’t
weigh anything you know the weight of
the instrument was light and I loved
that and then you know a boss pedal
instead of my digits who rack with
programmable rag on top of you know it
was just I was so misguided and and you
know I I promised myself to never tell
anybody to to to move in this area to do
anything that isn’t guided by your
preferences your personal preferences
and then shot every expert out that
tries to tell you that the the
instrument you like the most playing and
the sound you like the most
isn’t quality quality isn’t something
outside of us it’s always and experience
what kind of experience do you want do
you want the abstract unreal experience
of playing a high priced high-quality
product that you don’t really like
playing physically and you don’t like
the sound that comes out of it if that’s
what you want then you can just oh it’s
just so amazing I’m playing a whatever
pupu de pad you do you feel that
whatever right and you have to enjoy the
abstraction of that instead of the
hands-on physical real sensation of
really liking the neck I really like
these slim necks that are on fenders and
some Gibson’s and I don’t like the
Ibanez negative which is just slightly
wider they wear out my hands and my
muscles simply can’t
because I’m gonna blink playing this too
much so much and I like the that I can
phrase them I can grab the neck like
that and I can’t on an ibanez type of
widening they also do slip my necks and
some people say oh do you mean that
Ibanez is aren’t as good as other gets
asked no I don’t in fact they make
incredible guitars are always high
quality really cool stuff beautiful
instruments but I just don’t like them
because it’s not my preference right so
I could be surrounded by a million
people who think Ibanez is just off the
best ever right and it would still not
be what gives me the best experience and
so when you’re new and you’re just
starting out how do you pick anything
well you just play and play and play go
to musical stores and then play guitars
through that why doesn’t this guitar you
know why does this feel wrong for me and
then get clever on oh it’s because of
the action the strings are too far away
from Fred for all it’s because the neck
doesn’t feel as coolest as on that
guitar over there what’s the difference
you know take those physical sensations
and then transfer them to some kind of
knowledge about why it feels like it
does and then you gradually become wiser
at what your unique preferences are and
then the next level once you have
something that really you know that
really oh you just want to play when you
pick it up it’s like it wants to be
played instead of you struggling to play
it right it’s like you become a better
player by playing that guitar that’s
when you know you have the right one but
then the next level is what about the
sound right what about the pig and that
that whole discussion starts with the
pig ups some would say it starts with
the strings yeah but you know I prefer
strings that are really cool to play
that I can bend that I can work with
that influence is my overall sound more
than playing something that has a lot
more tone for instance and you can’t
hear it I’d guarantee you can’t hear the
difference when I’m playing different
with our other players if I use you know
well you know thicker strings really and
then tuned down my whole instrument
which would change the sound of it but
when it comes to pickups that’s the
first thing and that’s really hard right
because how do you try out pickups right
because you have to keep all L o
everything else equal alright so I can’t
listen to these pickups then just slap
another pair of pickups in ya I didn’t
you know I have to unscrew the thing and
you know and I have to buy them put out
of the braaap know the package and then
put them in and and deliver I can’t you
know get my money back when I’m install
them in agates ha so what I did back
then was I bought a cheap Squire because
I like to I like scalloping my necks
back then as well so that’s what I did
and then I just bought a couple of
pickups and then I stole I you know to
pleasure in learning how to install the
pickups and then I play with him with
the same amp and the same guitar with
new pickups and then I was just you know
playing him for a week and then you know
that was cool and I wrote it down and I
recorded it right so I wrote it down
what my experience was just a minute
just in the line on a piece of paper and
the name of the pickups then I bought
something new it was all DiMarzio
pickups by the way because they have
kind of a interesting detailed level of
this is the the amount of bass and
mid-tones and mid their high levels and
all so that was the easiest thing to go
by on their website and I just kept
changing them until I found out the
perfect combination what I really liked
and back then I was all into
neoclassical metal metal and so I I
decided on the red velvet which is the
most powerful single coil that I come
across for the neck position and a
chopper because it has so much high end
it was a humbucker in a single coil
format has so much high end compared to
other humbuckers so it gave me the right
kind of sound from the neck pickup this
is actually also
it’s just the neck pillow
that’s shift Wow I love that so that was
what I wanted I sent along back then but
of course you want to look at your Pig
as well
you know what I mean you’re playing
technique you know your pinch harmonics
exactly how you hit the pig and the
string and so on but when it comes to
choosing your guitar you your
preferences when it comes to choosing
pickups your preferences your experience
because it’s also really connected to
how you play how you do you like those
how do they react to your pinch
harmonics and your up story you know how
much sustain all of that and you don’t
even have to be conscious about it you
just have to feel and listen and then
BAM this this is really cool why to get
the right guitar you get the right kind
of pickups and then the amp is the third
thing right happy searching
I don’t have too much dialogue for you
there other than choose an amp based on
its basic sound where you really this is
really cool but then again if you take
an amp to a different room it sounds
completely different if you take an am
and put it over there
pointing towards you and you start
playing it sounds in one way you take
two steps in that direction and the amp
sounds radically different because
you’re not in you know in the line of
whatever right so it’s really different
the farther away you come from the
pickups and then you add effects as well
right and I got the the B b-plus
and the exotic effects really cool
distortion you got two channels and to
you they can make an inference
[Music]
so it’s like a little preamp actually
and then I have a booster that really
important because it takes the signal of
the guitar you know the pickups you like
so much and you chosen and then you just
raise the level and more more juice
comes to the amp it’s just amazing
that’s the most important effect I have
is the it’s this it’s the EP booster
from exotic effects but you don’t have
to buy anything as expensive as that to
get the effect and that reading it just
brings out the best of what you have
here right so enough talk about that
just trust your own intuition trust the
feeling you get when you play an
instrument then go out there and try
every single freaking guitar you can you
can get your hands on and then ask
yourself why does it feel like that what
is different from the other so you
become increasingly wiser as to what you
really like subscribe for more free
