Dodge Ram Quad Cab Sub Box

Video Review

Video Transcript

I’m calling that audio what we’re going
to show you today is our Dodge Ram boxes
this is one of my most popular boxes on
the website so I thought we would throw
together a video to show you what all
goes into the actual build progress of
this fox so to start off with I’ve got
the mold this orange mold I built about
four years ago I don’t know how many
boxes up built out of this mold so this
is an exact duplicate it was actually
made off of an O nine truck but it fits
all the way down to 2002 so everything
here we’re talking about today covers
Dodge Ram quad cabs from o2 to 2013 so
what we start with there’s very little
wood in this truck this box is actually
what I call if you look on my website I
have a tall box in a short box the short
box is a director up and replacement
there’s no steep lifting or anything
like that for more air space and
mounting them this is the tall box what
to start off with is I made a one-piece
template of the entire front lip of that
cargo area by doing it in one piece
there’s no seams so the fewer seams the
whole idea behind this box in general
the fewer seams if your pieces would
less likely you’re going to have failure
I see a lot of prefab boxes who come to
my shop for me to install the customers
buy off line and they always come back
because they rattle and buzz because the
joints are bad when you’re using half
inch and 5/8 wood or even some of them
use an eighth inch wood for back panels
it’s there’s nothing to hold it there
they will fail so these boxes are
completely bulletproof one piece going
all the way across on the tall box you
get three of them layered together so
yes you have a seam there but this is
wood glued clamped and nailed so this is
essentially as one piece of wood if I
was to throw this on the floor right now
nothing’s going to happen to it and even
though it is multiple pieces it is an
inch and a half thick across the entire
piece you’re not going to have this
so this piece is then inserted into my
mold the back pieces are then nailed and
glued and attached to the box everything
is glued together in one piece and then
fiberglass is later now this is not the
fiberglass that you go and get at
autozone or at Home Depot this is all
for us composites it’s high-quality
resin this is all the same materials
they’re using to build boats so this is
an ounce and a half fiberglass map
everything is hand laid there’s no chop
gun which means that I can sit here an
engineer if I want more glass on this
edge or on this edge and I can do that
you can’t do that that easily with chuck
gun so everything is handling and this
isn’t finished yet this is only three
layers I will do four layers of math on
this entire project already strong
enough for me to tap dance on I’m going
to make it stronger than that so
everything is laid into it the box pops
up and then I’ll attach the top on so as
it sits right now
there’s no divider since every one of
these boxes is built to order I don’t
keep anything on these in inventory
because everybody wants something
different so right now there’s no
divider because customers who are
running something bigger stumble for
wise if you need more airspace you take
out the divider or we can leave the
divider if you want some bracing and
just punch 3-inch holes drill 3-inch
holes through that divider so that way
the sub see the same amount of airspace
so we take a box like this glue and nail
on a new top clamp it all together let
it cure and then the rest of the top is
trimmed out once you get this the top
trimmed out and this is what you get all
the edges are rounded over and contoured
the box is wrapped as seamless as
possible there are no seams on this
entire box until you get back in here if
you have a 60/40 seat so there’s no
seams sitting around from front side it
just drops into the back seat
this factory seat still folds down you
have clearance between your soaps and
the seat and you have a ton of room here
so this is a factory off looking as an
options you can get on the O to 206
trucks that have the package trade that
folds out of the cargo area that’s the
only thing you have to take out if you
don’t have those then this is a direct
replacement it just drops right into the
cargo area
now if your truck has the solid bench
seat not the two seats that flip then
specify on the website and then this
piece will not be cut out so it will be
solid going across it it won’t gain you
any air space because my mold was made
off of a 60/40 back seat but this way
this is all one continuous piece now
when these trucks really first came out
everybody was really freaking out
because they thought oh we’re not going
to be able to stick any subs in there
you’re not going to be able this is no
room
you’re prefab boxes this is where the
issue is since they’re not laying
something in directly on top of those
cubbies and they’re trying to sit here
do a jigsaw puzzle of would you how many
joints that there is going on with that
I mean you can’t get a nail into a joint
with wood that’s going at an angle like
that expect it to hold so this by doing
one continuous piece out of fiberglass
you’re gaining a ton of mounting depth
so if you’re buying up yeah you can buy
a Dodge box offline for 50 bucks but you
can’t stick a magnet into the cubby
because the cubby is full of wood so
with that much wood in there you can’t
fit anything that’s decent subwoofer was
so with this this is the low profile box
so the short box this box has point 8
cubic foot per side which is perfect for
most tins some twelves are intended to
run that small shallow mount twelves
work perfect it’s rotted right over 3/4
cubic foot of air per side so if you’re
wanting to run something bigger like
there are some manufacturers that have
some twelves that are rated for four or
five hundred watts RMS but they’re going
to need over a cubic foot per sub like
one and a quarter typically on a twelve
that’s when we don’t put the divider it
makes a huge difference in theory yes
they still see the same out of here
because you have two subs and they’re
dividing the air but it really makes a
difference I’ve done a to be in
comparisons with the same set up and
they work fantastic so just as an
example of what can’t fit in there this
is a 700 watt RMS sub huge magnet 12
inch sub five and a quarter inch
mounting depth drops right in this is
the low profile box so you can run this
box with 1400 watts RMS without having
to raise your seat now if you are
wanting more mounting depth and you’re
wanting more air space then doing the
toolbox like that one is where you need
to go the tall box comes with the seat
spacers so this setup is for the 60/40
so you get your two outsides and then
you get the 40 spacer for the mill bench
it’s 3/4 inch it’s two layers of 3/4
inch wood inch and a half thick carpeted
once they’re bolted into underneath your
back seat you don’t tell you’re not
going to know that these are in there I
have customers all the time who are
concerned because they think they’re
going to be too close to the ceiling or
it’s going to feel funny sitting that
taller I sat back there I don’t have a
problem with it so with the short box
you don’t get these because you don’t
need I do sell them on the website
separately so if you do want more space
between the sub and the back seat the
bottom of the seat then you can still
run these these credits come with this
it’s a complete 60/40 setup but the
trick is these bolts now you may think
ok it’s just a bolt I had these made for
me if you were to go to any of your main
hardware store chains and get this same
bolt they all have a collar where it’s
just smooth around on the top there’s
Oh thread because they’re expecting this
to be going through the material the
bolts that have the color you can’t
tighten it all the way down so I had
these made for me where they don’t have
the color this allows you to suck that
bolt down all the way as far as you want
to so this is the real trick now if you
do a lot of stuff on the forums then you
always hear about people doing the back
seat mod what the mod is is you modify
the clips on the back wall and that
allows the seat back to fold forward
once you lift the seat you can either do
the back seat mod or you can do seat
spacers if you do seat spacers and raise
the seat now you can flip the back edge
back seat forward lay it down flat and
you can mount your amps on your back
wall so it gives you a lot more access
it’s a free mod so it makes it easier in
order to mount this stuff inside your
truck now the last thing that I want to
tell you about on the toolboxes all of
my sub boxes whether it’s dodge Rams or
anything else a lekar pickup I always
use nickel oded spring load terminals
and I saw it on speaker wire the tall
box you get these the short box
I can’t it’s not tall enough on the
backside so if I’m installing this for a
local customer I always drill through
the box run my speaker wire typically I
tie it or not neither secured to the box
with either high temperature hot glue or
with silicone or caulk of some sort and
let that cure fully so that way the
knots keeping it from pulling out and it
gives you more surface area for the
caulk and stuff to bite onto to hold it
to the box instead of expecting it to
hold on to a skinny piece of water if
you insist on having spring-loaded
terminals the only way that I can mount
these is up top that’s the reason why
they don’t come factory that way I just
think it looks tacky if you fold the
seat up it’s going to look like
something that came that way from Dodge
so if you do want these just put in the
comments telling me that you want them
I’m not going to charge you extra forum
but just specify where you want to wear
if you want them
and then I can do these for you I feel
like I’m going over a lot of information
here but this is better than reading a
two-page article on my website like I
said all of these boxes are custom order
I have different colored carpets the
dark grey graphite I have a pretty much
exact match for that the khaki what they
call khaki color which is kind of a
grayish tan I have a match for that and
then they have two different other
grades they’ve got a light gray and then
a darker grey the new oh nine and ups
pretty much black and then you have the
ones at the rubber floor so I mean I’ve
got a match for pretty much everything
it does not have to be a black box
specify on the website when you’re
placing the order on carpets specified
dark gray light gray or tan and I’m not
going to throw a tan on it that
completely looks out of place I have a
database full of carpets that I have
compiled over the 10 years I’ve been
doing this so I know what’s going to
match your truck so go to the website
check it out I’m typically on there in
the evenings for chat if you wanted to
talk you have questions hit me up WWN
ezio WF comm or if you have questions
feel free to give me a call all the
contact information is on the website
but like I said this is your solution
there’s no reason to buy a box made out
of a whole lot of wood this has 11
pieces of wood that’s how it’s there
that few seams the rest of its Farwest
this is the low profile box it doesn’t
weigh squat this is a 25 pound box
I’ve got subs that weigh more than this
so this box doesn’t weigh a whole lot or
you dollar flat-rate shipping from me
but like said contact me tell me what
subs you’ve got and I’ll tell you what’s
going to work out for you just check out
the website check out the gallery and if
you need anything feel free to give me a
shout
thanks for watching and I hope to be
doing business with you soon
